GENERAL INFORMATION:
* The script we will be using for auditions is not a final draft. This will be a somewhat fluid casting process, so we appreciate your understanding and co-operation. We promise to post updates as often as they are made available to us.
* Equity required auditions will be on Monday, 4/16 and Thursday, 4/19. Please check the Equity website for information and details. Non Equity actors are welcome to come and will be seen if/when there are gaps in the day (which there always are).
* Video auditions will be accepted (see below for details)

Cost Contract Equity - $835 /weeK
Non Equity $200 weekly ($1,400 total)
REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES
Rehearsals will, more
than likely, be Tuesday through Sunday 11am to 7pm at the rehearsal hall in La Mirada (same location as auditions).
La Mirada Theatre Performances are Wednesday
and Thursday night (7:30pm), Friday 8pm,
Saturday 2pm and 8pm and Sunday matinee
(2pm).

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
NOTE: Leslie Uggams has
been cast as Lena Horne
Young Lena Horne: 25-35. African
American actress will play Lena from her teens to
middle age. She is
beautiful, ambitious, and a devoted mother. Fiery and sexy, she captivates and
excites, while juggling career and relationship. Alto mezzo with a good belt.
Kay Thompson: 35-55. Caucasian
actress/singer/comedienne. Piano skills a plus. Able to portray a woman who’s
larger than life; her attitude says it all. Lena’s best friend. Actor also plays V.O. Passenger on ship.
Alto.
Lennie Hayton: 30-50. Caucasian
actor/singer. Piano skills a plus. Handsome, sophisticated and charming.
Composer/conductor with excellent reputation in the music world. Lena’s second
husband, he’s sexy and handsome, and totally devoted to her, but has a true
sense of himself and his expertise. Actor also plays
V.O. Announcer and V.O. Passenger on ship. Baritone or Baritenor.
Billy Strayhorn: 30-45. African American.
Attractive actor/singer. Billy is a composer/pianist. Lena’s soul mate and best
friend. Billy is a musical genius, and the fact that
he’s gay is never hidden. He had the courage to “come out” when it took real
courage to do so. He is philosophical about life, and gives Lena his strength
and advice. Actor also plays V.O. Announcer and Ted Sr. Lena’s father. Baritone or Baritenor.
Aiken Bones: 30-40.
African American– Dancer versatile in jazz, pop, and tap dancing. He and his
partner share a rich history with Lena. He is good natured, talented, and
willing to please. Actor also plays Louis Jones,
Lena’s first husband, and like her father, is handsome and likes to play cards.
He’s ambitious and wants traditional home where a wife stays at home and takes
care of the children. Actor also plays Medgar Evers, the Pastor of a church in
Atlanta and Civil Rights activist. Athletic and
strong tap dancer - in the style of the Nicholas Brothers - with some jazz and
ballet technique. Acrobatics a plus. Must be comfortable with singing as well.
Jivin’ Jones: 30-40.
African American– Dancer versatile in jazz, pop, and
tap dancing. Jones and Bones are cut from the same cloth. In their comedy act,
one gives the straight lines, the other the jokes. Actor also plays Teddy Jones
(Lena’s son) Raised by his father, Teddy resents his mother, blames her for not being in his life, though she tried her
best to get custody of him and he loves her. He’s handsome, talented and
extremely intelligent. A child of the sixties he experiments too much and
becomes a Civil Rights activist who influences Lena.
Athletic and strong tap dancer- in the style of the Nicholas Brothers - with
some jazz and ballet technique.
Acrobatics a plus. Must be comfortable with
singing as well.
Edna Horne Rodriguez (Lena’s mother) 30-45(Lena’s mother) African American female. Actor/singer/mover. A frustrated performer, jealous of her
daughter. Wants to be white and tries to pass. Humorous personality. Actor also
plays Ruby Horne, Lena's Aunt, personal assistant, and Nanny. Actor will also
play other ensemble role(s). Strong vocals and
comfortable with movement. Some tap dancing a plus. Alto or Soprano.
Amanda: 20-35. 20-35. African American
female. Actor/singer/mover. Negro activist in the forties. Actor will also play
other ensemble role(s). Strong singer comfortable with movement. Some tap dancing a plus. Alto or Soprano.
